Link Building: If Not Anchor Text, Then What?

If you have worked in the SEO industry, you are likely very familiar with the importance of anchor text when it comes to ranking well in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).  For years, effective link builders and internet marketers employed the strategy of building up as many relevant links with their targeted anchor text pointing back to their website. For example, if you were a snowboard company that sold custom snowboards, you would want as many backlinks as possible with the anchor text ‘custom snowboards’ pointing back to your site.  More often than not, the site that had the most relevant links with that specific anchor text would land in the number one spot for that search term.  Obviously every niche is different, but historically, this was the strategy most successful internet marketers focused their link building efforts on.
